The Triple Constraint: Time. Cost. Scope
Time. Cost. Scope. What’s your philosophy when one leg of the triangle breaks?
Do you get blamed, blame others, or stay silent?
During a rollout to close a quality deficit, resource constraints meant we had to make a trade-off. We reduced the scope to maintain the quality metrics, at the temporary cost of increased turnaround time.
The client thanked us for transparency and ultimately expanded our partnership.
As Mike Abrashoff said in Chapter 3 of It’s Your Ship: Lead By Example,
----"It’s funny how often the problem is you. Whenever I could not get the results I wanted … I asked myself three questions:
1. Did I clearly articulate the goals?
2. Did I give people enough time and resources to accomplish the task?
3. Did I give them enough training?
I discovered that 90 percent of the time, I was at least as much a part of the problem as my people were.”
Constraints aren’t the enemy. They’re the test of your priorities and your leadership.
